Bagavathi is a 2002 Tamil film directed by A. Venkatesh, which features Vijay and Reemma Sen in the leading roles. VadiveluK. VishwanathYugendran and Ashish Vidyarthi play other supporting roles, while Deva composed the music for the film. The film opened to posituve reviews and did good business commercially.[1]

Plot

Bhagavathi (Vijay), owns a tea shop cum hotel near Chennai High court. He lives with the aim of bringing up his younger brother Guna (Jai) as a doctor. He also befriends a modern girl Anjali (Reemma Sen) who is a daughter of a Judge. Guna has a girl friend Priya with whom he accidentally develops a physical relationship. Guna's love is objected by the Priya's father. Bhagavathi to fulfill his brother's wish tries to convince the Priya's father. But in vain. Guna attempts to marry Priya even without the knowledge of his brother. But Priya's father collapses the marriage and Guna is killed in front of Bhagavathi.
Guna on his last moments promises that he would be with his brother forever. After Guna's death, everyone comes to know Priya is pregnant due to the accidental relationship with Guna earlier. Bhagavathi reminds of his brother's last words and thinks his brother is going to be born again. Meanwhile, to protect the social status, Priya's father attempts to kill the child before it is being born. Bhagavathi turns to a don to save his brother's child. Overcoming all the hurdles put by Priya's father, Bhagavathi manages to protect Priya for safe birth of his brother's child with the help of Anjali,her mother and his tea shop helper Vadivelu.

Production

The director Venkatesh selected a newcomer, Jai, to play the role of Guna after seeing him at Jai's uncle, Deva's, recording studio - mentioning that the youngster looked like actor Vijay.[2] Although his role in the film was relatively minimal, he has since gone on to appear in successful films such as Chennai 600028Subramaniyapuram andEngeyum Eppodhum.[3]
The film was shot at various locations including Chennai and Vishakapattinam.[4]


Release

The film released in the Diwali season of 2002 alongside several other big budget films like Vijayakanth's Ramanaand Ajith Kumar's Villain, hence took a slow opening at the box office.[5]
The film was released in Malaysia under the title Pasupathy.[6] A dubbed version of the film in Telugu was prepared and released in late 2005.[7]

The soundtrack consists of six songs composed by Deva.[8]
