Thuppakki (Tamil: துப்பாக்கி; English: Gun) is an upcoming Tamilaction adventure film written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss, which will star Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal.[3][4] Vijay will be playing as an encounter specialist in the film,[5] featuring background score and soundtrack composed by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography handled bySanthosh Sivan,[6] is scheduled for a mid-2012 release.
Development
In July 2010, sources reported that Vijay would star in an action film by A. R. Murugadoss, after completing his ongoing projects.[7][8] Vijay's father S. A. Chandrasekhar was to produce the film initially, before Kalaipuli S. Thanu took over the project.[9] The film became titled as Thuppakki, contrary to early reports, according to which Maalai Nerathu Mazhaithuliwas considered as the title.[10][11] National Film Award winners Sreekar Prasad, Thotta Tharani and Santhosh Sivan were roped in for editing, art direction and cinematography, respectively.[12]
Casting
Deepika Padukone was first reported to essay the female lead.[13] Later several actresses including Sonam Kapoor,[14][15]Priyanka Chopra,[16] who later clarified that she was never approached for the film,[17] Priya Anand,[18] Pranitha,[19] andKingfisher Calendar model Angela Jonsson[20][21] were rumoured to play the role. Kajal Aggarwal was eventually confirmed,[22][23] who went on declare Thuppaaki as her biggest film in her career.[24] Akshara Gowda was cast to play the second female lead.[25] Gautham Kurup was chosen to play a significant role,[26] while Vidyut Jamwal, who was simultaneously shooting for Ajith Kumar's Billa II as well, would be playing a role with negative shades.[27][28] Sathyan, following several collaborations with Vijay, confirmed that he was part of this project, too.[29] Further malayalam superstarJayaram also confirmed his presence in this project.[30][31] [32][33]
Filming
According to early reports, filming was to commence at Thiruchendur and continue in Mumbai.[34] Supposed to start on November 26, 2011,[35] it began on 5 December in Mumbai.[36] Vijay would appear in a completely different with a different hairstyle as well as a facial makeover.[37] The first schedule that lasted for 35 days was completed by January 2012.[38] The climax featuring a stunt sequence involving Vijay and 60 fighters was shot using nearly 7 cameras towards the end of January.[39] With cameraman Santosh Sivan's assistance, Vijay donned the hat of a cameraman for a candid scene set at a real location in Bandra. Santosh was reportedly surprised as the shot was perfect and retained it in the film. The team had to wrap the scene as people became aware of the matinee idol's presence amidst them.[40] Santosh commented to the unit that it was “perfect shot in sync with the required scene.”[41][42] Currently,a song sequence featuring Vijay and Kajal is being shot atBangkok.The song is rumoured to be choreographed by a Bollywood choreographer.[43][44]The ace cinematographer has updated in a micro-blogging site, “Most of Thuppakki is being shot in real locations, with hidden cameras”. The distribution rights were bought by Gemini Film Circuit which produced and distributed Nanban.[1] A dubbed same-titledTelugu version of the film is also expected to release simultaneously.[47] Thuppakki was declared as the most awaited movie of the year 2012 currently through an online poll conducted by Imoviehall,an Indian movie website. The soundtrack will be composed by Harris Jayaraj, working for the second successive Vijay film after Nanban. Akon was rumoured to sing one song for the album.[49] After a long time, Vijay has sung a song for the album which is a party number.[50
